The National Adult Education Honor Society is an organization that recognizes adult learners for meeting their basic literacy goals.
Pro-Literacy Detroit honored the Tutor and Learner of the year. Tutor of the Year, Josephine Hampton received a plaque for her dedication in helping her learner achieve his basic literacy skills. Additionally, she was recognized for reporting hours, sending in follow-up reports, and helping the Literacy Assistants maintain their records. Pro-Literacy Detroit’s Learner of the Year received a plaque for achieving many of her basic literacy goals and career goals. She attends most of her sessions and is very willing to up-date Pro-LiteracyDetroit’s Literacy Assistants on her progress. |

| Pro-Literacy Detroit held it’s Annual Meeting and National Adult Education Honor Society Induction on September 10th, at St. John’s Episcopal Church. All members of Pro-Literacy Detroit were invited: Board Members, Tutors, Learners, Volunteers, and Friends. The meeting was conducted by Vice-President, Fred Tandy.
The Governance Committee presented its slate for the 2004 Board of Directors: Nancy Balog, President, Fred Tandy, Vice-President, Adelia Cooley, Secretary, Jay Gardiner, Treasurer, Josephine Bell, David Bruce, Nancy Hanna-Galster, Carlson Jackson, P.H. D., Charles Middleton, William Plumpe, Loretta Smith, and James Wyatt II. The slate was approved by the Membership. Committee reports were made available by Chairpersons. |

| Following the reports and election of the Board of Directors, Pro-Literacy Detroit honored and inducted 44 adult learners into the National Adult Education Honor Society. Executive Director, Margaret Williamson introduced the Guest Speaker, Detroit Free Press Columnist, Rochelle Riley, who gave a very warm and heartfelt presentation on achieving goals and dreams. The Inductees received a lapel pin, Certificate of Achievement, and a Letter of Recognition to present to their employers. Family members were present. The awards were presented by Pro-LiteracyDetroit’s Office Manager, Deborah Washington, and Program Administrator, Omar Sims. |

| On November 14, 2003, Pro-Literacy Detroit sent 12 representatives to Pro-Literacyof America’s National Conference in Washington, D.C. This was the first conference since Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc., and Laubach International merged. There will be more information about the conference in the next newsletter. |
