Was a BIG Success

If you place seven Scrabble tiles on the board, it would automatically spell “success”. Pro-LiteracyDetroit’s first annual “Evening of Scrabble and Jazz” was held on August 28th, at the Detroit Yacht Club. The atmosphere, food, and entertainment made for an incredible event.
The evening began with sweet music by Detroit Jazz artist, Shahida Narrullah. While anxiously waiting for the Scrabble Tournament to begin, people took advantage of the wonderful spread of hors d’oeuvres, and visited the Silent Auction. There were over 200 guests in attendance, including a surprise visit from Congressman, John Conyers. Representatives of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, Senator Buzz Thomas, and Governor Jennifer Granholm were there. Executive Director, Margaret Williamson received Testimonials from the Mayor expressing the importance of the work Pro-Literacy Detroit does in Metropolitan Detroit.

the creatively designed sessions of Scrabble. Trophies were given to the winners of Session I and Session II. The scores were tallied by five judges. GMAC won the corporate trophy. A 50/50 raffle was held. The proceeds of the raffle assisted seven Pro-Literacy Detroit Learners to attend the Pro-Literacyof America National Conference in November 2003.
